Greek Orange Cake Recipe

This Greek Orange Cake Recipe, known as Portokalopita, is a traditional dessert of Greek cuisine based on orange fruit. Furthermore, the cake belongs to the group of syrup desserts, and the main ingredient is the orange fruit combined with phyllo dough.

As neighboring countries and most Albanians have immigrant relatives in Greece, we have borrowed different recipes. And, the recipe we are sharing today is one of our favorites. Also, Orange is a seasonal fruit, widely used in cooking recipes during the winter season such as biscuits, cakes, salads, etc.

Moreover, this dessert tastes best even during the season holiday.

Ingredients

  • 1 package of ready-made filo dough- 450 g
  • 3 eggs
  • 150 g of sugar
  • 250 ml milk
  • 250 ml vegetal oil
  • orange zest
  • 2 oranges
  • 1 package of baking powder
  • Vanilla

for the syrup

  • 500 g of sugar
  • 350 ml of orange juice + water
  • cinnamon stick
  • 1 orange slice

Directions

  1. In the beginning, we will prepare the filo dough by gathering filo layers side by side as accordion sheets.

  3. Meanwhile, we will put two oranges to boil for one hour and let them cool. Boil the oranges only with water with the lid closed.

  11. After a few minutes, the cake absorbs the syrup. So, we will cut it into pieces as we like. In the end, let it cool and serve as it is, accompanied by ice cream or coffee.
